journey through a year

Every year is an adventure, is a new journey in your life.

Some years have more to give to you, then you'll expected it. 

Some years are less dramatic and others have many changes on the way.

My year was literally a journey to different places, old and new ones and also in making decision where and how to go on. 

Starting with a new job in sight, I flew to Thailand to visit a friend and to discover a new and different country. I went from Bangkok to the South coast and then through the whole south from near Malaysia up to the "James Bond" Island, over to Phuket and then with the plan high up to the North and landed in Chiang Mai and took the bus down again to finally be back in Bangkok.

Then back in Berlin, Germany I discovered that things went another way then planed. The job as a teacher would not become true yet, as the whole school did not open. Seemed the boss got cold feet about the financial challenges. So starting searching for a new job as I have just left Sweden. 

So starting again was not my problem as I did this several times. You know I always believe that you have to go your way and it will bring you to the places and experiences you need and want to go. Sometimes time is ready, sometimes you are not. So it seemed in this case that I won't be lucky in Berlin and so I went back to Sweden and there I was very lucky. Just there was again a promising job or two in Berlin. Now it was time to think and write down what to do and how. Finally I decided for Berlin as it did look better. I declined but then was without a job. Starting all over again.  

Now many people would feel that everything is going wrong and whatever you do, you seem to choose wrong, but I believe there is a lesson in everything and one is to believe and have patience. 

While searching again I worked at my personality. Things which I wanted I did and some things I wanted to change, I went to people who could help me. You know sometimes you need other people to look from another angle.

That did indeed help. And I had -like it seems - the universe also working for me. A love came into my life and two people left my space. 

I still think about them, but less now and let them go there way. Though we did not parted the nicest way and a misunderstanding led them away, but sometimes you just have to let it go. People have to make their own experience and must always pay for what they do. You can't always safe or change or make it better. Sometimes you have to trust and which the best inside you for them. 

This is also a journey.

Then I discovered my own town again. Like a tourist. Strange in a way.

Finally having my new job and getting also the experience that working as usual is never again the solution, I began a new chapter and also started to go to university again. Well, not again, the first time and will do so the next three years, next to my job. 

In the same time I missed my Sweden and therefore I flew back to meet my friends.

When I came back again to Berlin, I realized that my love affair with Berlin is over. Also I already moved another time (the sixth in one year) and started living in an area I have never been much before. It's a nice area and quite. 

Now living with my love is something new for me, as I always lived alone at my very own place but it is nice and wonderful, thought a challenge for both of us too. 

But like in the last years I have become a traveler. 

Manchester was it in autumn and London. Something new and something old- like the saying goes. 

That was exciting, beautiful and lovely.

Now that the year has nearly gone I have worked at my new working place a while and had a lot of challenges. A lot stress and a lot to think about. A lot to deal with and try to figure out how to do best, as I lead a team and manage the quality and also doing nursing. Quite a lot and then I have to keep in mind there is a dog home, a love and then my friends. Stay tuned to what they do and how they feel is something I try to fix as good as I can, while learning and doing everyday things which have to be done and also christmas presents will be bought and wrapped. 

To get christmas feelings is something I still wait for.... It is not really coming up..  Am to much bussy. Very much like in the last years it takes  a while. But don't worry, the spirit comes along...always.

Yes, this year also had its dark political effects. The racism came back into open field and the hate, the gun shootings have become kind of everyday thing and the bombs inside our heart have tried to destroy our faith in democracy. The results of mistakes come to real danger now as one of the mistakes was to keep people stupid in many ways. But also we had many light hours, hours of hope and courage and people seem to awake from a coma they have been or getting away from being blind to being more the seeing eye. 

Sure next year is a leap year but also a year for decisions. Again, we face important times and the decision we will make will more then ever lead the way for the next future. 

So what future do you want?! 

Meaning, it is time to stand up and even when we fear one or two things could go wrong or go a way we don't like. But let's be true, a change never leaves you without the question what to let lose and give up. A change is only possible if you leave things behind and that means also things we are used to. Sometimes we have to free our self from things to get free and to be able to do the next step, even when we fear the future, because if we don't we come to the point where we must and then it won't be that easy, that nice, that way you like to have it. Now you still can decide and go the way, find your way easier then later. 

That is also why christmas is a god start to be grateful and think about what you have as most of us are really rich, and some are rich for the wrong reason and others believe them self poor for the wrong reason. 

Many things come a bit later then we believe or should I say expect, but they do come true if you hang on. I can tell you from my own experience. Many things come when the time is right, when you are ready and the situation is as it is needed. Therefore have patience and go on the way you want to. Keep your goal in mind and do all on the way which gives you what you need and want. A bit planing is also good and then be flexible. That way you can react and catch what you need and come along the way you desire. Make your own path. It's true, it is the only you'll become happy. Which does not need we can go together, cross our ways, but just remember, you have to walk alone on your own way. 

That means sure not to care to much what people say, but listen to them is necessary. It gives you the information you need to reflect yourself. 

Now, let me send you some love and light and which you a merry christmas. Whatever you do, wherever you are, make the best of it. I will be working most of the holidays but am happy anyway. Be happy, be grateful and try to shine and let the sun shine in your heart. Make yourself some beautiful moments, just because YOU deserve it. Do it all for you, instead for the others. Do what makes you happy. Do what you like.  If it is just to give a smile.

The secret of Jane Austen

Still we are in the autumn of books and another classic is on my list. I can't resist to tell you about it. Jane, my Jane, the lovely Miss Austen. The women who wrote in secret about the real life and the ideal who was given everyone to follow, but she refused to let it be the only thing worth living for. Yes, she put her critics of the times into her books in a way you have to discover by reading and knowing that the critics are sitting in the characters she describes and let live the way she thought it should be.  

And yes, it was much about how a women should live and what she actually believed it should become and be at the end. She wanted to show a way to free women from their own cage. 

Thought, after her famous books came out, most believed that women waited till marriage before they had a sexual life and all that stuff but that was not always the case and yes, there have been strong and rich women with own money in that time, but that is another book and it is about a very smart women in the time of Jane Austen and she owned a lot and all to herself, had her love affairs and also with women. But let's not get away from Jane, our dear Jane. 

Are her books only for women? No, they are for all. 

Are the books only about love? No, they are mostly about conections, families and traditions. They are about habits of us humans and how we deal with them and the possibility to learn from mistakes. Love just comes in the way and is like a care to bring you from one theme to another, to connect stories and people and situations. 

Are the books for today readers just amusment? Yes, they can be and will be but also they give you the opportunity to compare with the habits of our time and how we deal with things and what is actually better now and then. 

You will be surprised how people dealed with unease and how less medicine of our days help compared to what they used to take then for example. 

But yes, the books, no matter which one, are amusment and so easy to read and even know they have a lot of characters you won't miss a thing and can follow each story, even if you take a longer break from reading a book of hers. Jane Austen also has a very wonderful language and way to use words. It feels soft and delighting to read the letters and you whish sometimes to be part of the stories and have the ball and talk with the characters by yourself and sometimes you dream of being that easy to take a walk like they did. 

I am also sure you will like the places in England today too, which Jane was writing about but you can also find similar places like, well in Stockholm, as I have experienced myself. 

Of course Janes books are famous and you have for sure seen some of the movie adaptations. Some better, some less, some very Hollywood, some very alike the book, like those made from BBC. 

I wrote about them, just check them under DVD or movie. 

Anyway, still many believe Jane Austen is no literature. If they just knew. It is!

She might be not a Shakespeare, but she has class and is fun to read and gives you more then the eye catches on first sight.

Shakespeare it is we talk about now.

Why is he still one of the writers I recommend to read, no matter what you have read and what you use to read? Why is he one of those we need to read to understand ourself, our culture and language?

We know mostly Shakespeare these days from the movies which are made from the books and we know there are plays in the theatre. But a young generation may ask why follow an old guys stories?

You may be right but that fella is not something else and he is not just something commercial.

Yes, he was already famous in his lifetime. But he was good and smart and did not just write some plays to entertain.

You may now say it is only dramas you'll watch but that's not true. He also wrote a lot of comedy- kind of. Yes, it can be fun to read his books.

So what is the most famous book of him, as he did wrote quite a lot?

Seems the most popular is the book of "Romeo and Julia". Many take it just as a story of two families who fight each other and two people falling in a forbidden love (which has been covert by many). 

Mostly we have read the book in school and found it kind of boring, or painful, dull or could not even take it. 

Schools like to take this book as they believe it is the most easy book to understand, but that is not really true as you are mostly to understand the love play as a young man but not the bigger picture. Shakespeare was by no mean just writing a love story, a tragic one, but it was much more. The fight was the main story actually, but it was a synonym for a political situation home in England and the fight between class systems and believes.  Yet, the play takes part in Italy which was meant to be a trick to avoid to not be able to show the play back home. Thought people did quite understood the message.

But let's look on the other books like those around from 1606.

They show the mood of the time and those plays addressed very powerful the political situation and social upheavals. They reflected the fraught cultural moment. Shakespeare wanted to show a mirror and  the pressure which was to live with. He also shows the religious terror and the beginning of the modern time clashing with the old standards.

The dramas and also tragedies of "King Lear", "Macbeth" and "Antony and Cleopatra" have been written in this theme and they use for example dark element as witches, grimly regicide and the obvious mad minded man and also goth elements. 

But it is horror you can't stop reading as the language of Shakespeare is such as rhythmic and beautiful and you are astonished buy the amount of different words and words you never heard but you still understand the saying and writing and situation you are stuck with in the book. You can also see the comedy, the laughter and feel the cry and craziness. 

You may then remember the light of Shakespeare "Romeo and Julia" and how funny the play is or "A midsummer nights dream" fantasy and laughter. Yes, the comedy has a lighter language, but is in no way easier to understand. Just in the first moment you may think so. But all books have in common that the language is kind of a song you sing while reading. 

Shakespeare language is to the point, no waste and always rhythmic and has a melody you can't miss if you read it aloud, nor even in silence. 

Thought sadly these days kids have problems reading even "Romeo and "Julia". Which is truly a sad thing and something we should think about. It is not only that language has gone forward and changed in the way we use it and words have also changed, it is that the understanding of long sentences have been lost and I wonder how we will get young people to learn to understand the old books if they only can understand twitter long terms. Teachers should work hard I guess and in a way movies maybe can help to want to read the books again and talk about them, but can the movies show the meaning of the books? Will the new "Macbeth" in cinema stand this test or just be a spectacle? 

Thanks to the language actors still love to perform Shakespeare as it is a wonderful language to use, and it is like a spell on you when you start it buy yourself to say those words loud out.

That is why I recommend to read this book and give it to anyone and press them in a way to read them, to learn from them and to understand history and the time now and also where we come from, how old some problems are and to touch our hearts to do the right thing. 

Give it a try, please. 

But do me a favor, avoid those modern translation and versions who put the plays in our days language. It destroys all the fun. And if your language is not english in first, try the english and your countries language versions, as it is a difference sometimes. Shakespeare is all but easy to translate.

Jan Bo Vinter Poulsen- an Interview

Hey Folks, here is another interview I made with a great artist, a painter whom I was lucky to meet and talk to. I hope you'll have fun reading it and look at his work! He is very god and a very amazing person.  

Jan Bo, you are a painter and an architect and are coming from Danmark but now you are living in London.
If I remember right since four years and since that time you are also working mostly as a painter. Is that right?

Yes, since 2011 I have been drawing and painting in London. I have slowly been transforming myself into a figurative artist, looking at people and making my emotional responses from what I see and feel - sometimes stories built from glimpses into human behaviour and the way fate brings people together, sometimes purely a transcription like a courthouse drawing. It is portraiture and storytelling for me. I do it from an observational perspective, and whether I'm noticed or unnoticed is often reflected in my work.

If I look at your work, I see a different style of technique and you use different ways of making a picture. You do arcrylic paint, but also oil. I also see that you use pins and so I see a mix of painting and drawing. How come? 

In the search to express my observations, exploring different and challenging materials has been essential. Sometimes the use of mixed media has been a way to show the complexity of the scene and capture different layers.

So, with those different techniques you create art and as I could see on Instagram and Pinterest you seem to go through a lot of stages before the last painting of a t.ex. human is finished. You also show those several steps to people- why?

I often find it very difficult to tell when a drawing or painting is finished. I do like to record the progress and I don't mind sharing my journey. Some earlier stages may tell a different story, and as the story progresses, the painting is changing, the drawing is changing, and the figures are somehow clarifying and dissolving at the same time.

You also show your sketches. You have a sketch book if I am right.

The sketchbook has over the years become a guideline - sort of a chronometer or diary. It is with me at most times, and I try to make notations and records of things I see and feel. I love drawing while I'm out - I have made the whole of London my studio. Whether I'm among strangers or friends and family, it is a dialogue - a language for me. I can step away from the conversation and make myself a spectator, but I feel I'm still in dialogue with them via my painting and making such a record of the whole experience.

Well, from what I saw of the sketch book I would call it art and cannot help but wonder if someone, when the book is finished, wants to buy this collection of sketches, as I have the feeling when going through them it is like reading a wonderful book, would it be possible to buy it?

To part with the book seems difficult right now. I would like to one day perhaps publish an edited version of the sketchbook or should I say several sketchbooks. There are some highlights, lowlights and experiments that I'd like to share. But mostly I see it as a tool for my development, and in the future I will be making more paintings from my sketches.

Is it right you paint every day? That would also mean you must have a lot of great sketch books at the end, is that right?

I paint and draw every day. It is essential for my being as an artist to produce and record. Lucian Freud said ...

I had the luck to watch you sketch people and you seem to have a fast eye and a good sense of catching emotions and feelings. Was it always like that or did this become stronger with time?

I would like to think there is constant progress but unfortunately it is not always like that. They are dead ends for me and sometimes I take one step forward and two steps back. I have developed a stronger certainty of my way of working and don’t get very concerned about the opinions of the people around me while I'm painting and drawing. Sometimes there can be quite an encouragement from bystanders to change things or from people who are not happy with their appearance.  

Next question leads us further to the question what or who inspires you as an artist? 
I read you have been many time to the National Gallery in London and studied t.ex. The Immaculate Conception by Diego Velázquez.  

I look to the old masters and I'm hugely inspired by their techniques, their concessions, and their ability to capture difficult and emotional topics. I draw often from other people's art to make it my own, to take it in, and I don't regard my drawings from them as copies but as individual works of art.

You know, the last question is actually about the fact that you paint mostly humans. Different kind of people, like a Punk Dj, naked women and man and also people in a Pub. You seem to like them, but the style is very different in which you paint them. Some portraits reminds us of pictures from Albrecht Dürer and Francisco Goya, because of the dark background. Others more of Van Gogh and other paintings of the way you did paint in 1910 till '40, as you use a lot of colours in them. 
You have mostly a more raw style, but when you paint naked people or others then your way of painting is more soft. Has this a reason or does it just happen to match what you see?

I love people and their diversity. I see people kind of like components in an electrical device in the way that they interact, working together and making life.

I saw you once or twice put out on Pinterest a series of variation of the same man you painted- like we could follow the process but as I saw all those five or seven versions I wonder if you can buy those as a series as you showed on the internet? I talk about the " Getting the man out of the canvas" series t.ex..

Those images are purely process and a way for me to guide me in the paint process. Posting wile the work is unfinished have given me feedback and further inspiration and I think this is one of the things I have learned from using Instagram, Facebook, Tumblr, Twitter and Pinterest.

Looking on your pictures, paintings and sketches they seem all like old/ classic but new/modern in the same time, thought you just have started your work as an artist. 
But you started as an architect. Seems the connection to people is also very strong there as I saw your work in the Danish Design Centre at the exhibition "Honey I'm home". There you ask in your work- 2007: "Can a person live in a sandwich?"
Yes, how come an architect goes into painting?
How come that many architects have a near bond to art?

For me, it is all really linked. There are in theory no limits, it is very fluid, and while what I'm doing at the moment is not architecture, I could not have created it without my background.
Last question now.
Where can people see your work now or in the future? Is there any exhibition in planing?
I'm working on getting my first London show and finding a gallery to represent me in the future.

Discover London - Day 3 & 4*

Waking up from the sun shining on my face. How wonderful will this day be! First look on the mobile to see how many plans are flying above London.

Like you see, there are a lot, a lotta lot… Yes a sky without plans over London is no London sky. People also liv next to highways and I can’t remember hearing or reading any complain. Maybe People in Berlin should think about that while complaining about air traffic. Thought a Dr. Who must have a very good Tardis to never hit a plan.

Well, then our Daytrip is planed to go to Windsor. Nice town and a lot of people around. Due to change of planes, we never went inside the castle, thought it is more likely better to do so in summer time, as it is said that the castle is quite cold inside. So we took a boat tour which last ‘round 40 min, but I say better just do this in summer. The tour was nice but actually not really that good and in winter not really warm to sit. Thought we had best of weather it was definitely colder in Windsor then in London.

If you come by car then you will drive o part of the ways the cyclist tour will take place each year in summer.

If you come by train, then you will have to station to arrive and both are in the city and just a few minutes away from the castle. Shopping, eating and meeting queen Victoria on the way of course. Maybe when you are shopping you’ll find that shirt with Sherlock Holms signs.

So, my day went on to drive back to London and there I decided to visit the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Best museum I ever was in my life! The museum is to find on the South Kensington Underground Station  from the Piccadilly Line (blue), or Circle and District Line.

Many information spots show the way to the museum and there you will see that the science museum and others are in the same area and standing around. But be sure to plane more then one day, if you want to visit them all.

The V&A museum is a very big one and will be enough for a whole day. Free entry as always, but you can spend some money to help keeping this museum alive and open for everyone.

I think that everybody should once in his live visit this temple. The exhibitions are sorted after theme and world place and not to big. You got to see very exceptional examples of art, paintings, figures, writing, cloths, statues and so on. You even can try to master yourself in art as they have classes and an area where you can study the material, the forms and also are aloud to touch it. Shizmo did like it as well, to touch and proof his chills.

But the pure beauty and the great achievement mankind has reached and made is in no way to ignore. Yes religion and politic helps to bring out the bad in human kind, but they also helped to build up such beauty and shiny and amazingly big things that it is such a pleasure to see them. Sometimes so big, so huge and sometimes so small, but showing off so much and such deepness. I could have made a thousand pictures, but that would be dull at the end and taken away the secret you will discover when being there.

You will gaze and enjoy it and then need a walk, or go to a nice restaurant or just drive around and outside the centrum you’ll gonna by a traditional meal – Fish & Chips. Yes, by them outside the centrum as it cost just the half price but no matter where you by them, it is worth tasting them as the fish is fresh and so the meal taste best.

And we have already reached the fourth of our days.

Best French breakfast in town and also a good place for coffee and cake later if you want. The coffee is in Soho and the gay area which has become the last year very clean- sadly. 

The gentrification did not stop here either.

I meet my friend Frank, the singer and painter and we went on after having our coffee (me) and tea (him) to see a bit of Soho and to maybe shop (he did- I am dull in that way ;-)…) Surprisingly I found myself siting next to a coupling .. well see the picture!

After that we took our walk into the south of the town which is different to the west part, which I already knew and of course to the centre. But a nice area and much what many of us may call a typical English area.

Sunny day it was and we both had to talk about cats and art. And of course that cats are art itself.

In the evening we went on to a club near the Clapham Underground Station and as we took the busses and because of some work on the street our bus took another way as planed and we got our self some Harry Potter moments as we drove through very small streets and curves in our typical red London bus.  Can’t deny that this was much fun. 

The club itself is not that big but nice and cosy, we entered it with Shizmo together, though he came secretly with us. Why where we there? Ever heard of Pam Ann? Google her!

An American Stand up comedian and as she was in a club doing her show, she did not have to hold on and keep her lever of strongly language fun low, as she must do in big theatres. So, much of the F- word and strong language came out, but what a lot of fun and how hilarious it was and so political incorrect but true. Sometimes a club is the best place to have true fun without borders.

And then the night has arrived.

*But here comes a plus day… Did you knew that, didn’t you?!

Well, day five was also very sunny and I travelled to Hammersmith, another very nice area. I was there because there is the “RIVER HOUSE TRUST”.

It’s an organisation, which helps people who are dealing with HIV or Aids. You can go there to talk with them, get a Massage or Reiki for a good price or have lunch. All the money or at least part of it goes to the project and helps them to keep up the good work. You can also buy art there and help raising money in that way for them. So I did. I did buy and had a tea and meet wonderful people. Took a walk around the house and how could I not. A sunny day is meant to be to be outside. Thanks to new friends I went to get to know more about the area in Hammersmith and it is a very lovely area. Not so much the shopping, but how people live, thought it cost a fortune. Crazy as it is, renting a flat cost you around 1000 Pound and buying so much that I believe that people have given up the thought of how to pay back, if.

Westfiled is another very new Shopping Mall in London and very huge and kind of spacy. Not for the poor to buy there things but a place for most of us and there is also a store named “Waitrose” (not the cheapest food store)

But they share every income together. It’s a share company a like. All workers own there a peace.

And the free coffee was good. 

-------> Now most of us will pack our baggage and leave London to the airport.

Time for some tips.

Buy yourself a day travel card in London instead of an Ouster card. It’s cheaper, but know, those day travel card is first to buy each day after! 09:30 o’clock.

For the trip to the airport take a single ticket. When you are coming or leaving from Heathrow take the underground as the cheapest way but it is also the longest time. Otherwise Cheswick and Heathrow are also to reach by train, thought it sometimes takes the same long time, as London traffic can be difficult and make a train slow as hell.

To the other airports, be aware of starting your way very earlier as it is far and often problems are on the way. Don’t forget that those also cost much more money to travel to the airport.

So maybe instead of buying the cheapest flight ticket, think it over.

Heathrow is a big airport and even when you have checked in earlier home or in the hotel, be there minimum 1 hour before your -security check in- has its last time. England is not part of EU and that means a lot of time to plan for the airport. Also have in mind that the ways are long on the airport itself.

I by myself booked my flights from Air Berlin but had British Airways at the end. But surprisingly there are better as Air Berlin and I liked flying with them even thought Pam Ann made many jokes about them.
