and it seems she is right in time to help you, to take your pain away and make you feel better and so she is away in a second and you wonder how this went, shaking your head to feel clear in mind again. Really- that or like this is what many people experience with the staff. Be it the helping nurse or the nurse who learn three years and has all in mind a doctor has learned too and so are the most of us on one hand grateful for each help and on the other hand unhappy about the narrow corridor of time they have with them and sometimes the feeling of being forgotten strikes into the heart.
This is everywhere to find, in hospitals, in nursing homes and even when nurses come to your home and house.
At least most people know the lack of nurses and therefore most of them have the understanding, however do all want the best results in nursing, which politics and organizations always promise.
But according to the requirements, rules and laws we do not have to less staff. Quite the reverse! The maltreated and harassed staff gets told that they are too many. How come?
Is it really the staff costs? It is also because social service and other carers are part of the number of staff which is one of them to count if you have to make sure as a boss how many people are in your boat but those staff actually are not doing the nursing job.
And then you have to make profit which gets harder every year to achieve. And if you make profit you can't simple give it to the staff as there are not only costs you have to keep in mind, also the owners want a big part of it for their own. Sadly this is a truth and so nursing is not allowed to cost but has to meet the highest standard. An obvious contradiction. Which still is ignored by those who have it most easy to do a change here but they are in no danger of a bad nursing for them self.
But the guilt can be pushed not only on politics. Far to many participant have done far to many missteps but non of them really wants to admit it and even less wants to change this situation and do better and stop the wrong ways we started.
What good is it then to me to hear that you have such a respect for the work if those words are just empty phrases. It only does one thing to the staff- it puts all the charge to them.
No wonder that the stuff is tired to be praised and in the same time to be disregarded.
But yes the staff itself has to free themselves from the clutches of their own and the moral gudgel and has to understand there is only one way of making a pressure. Care must be able to cost! Care needs staff. Care needs time. And therefore must we go on the streets and let the affected feel how much they are in need of nurses. A hospitals heart is the nursing staff and the brain the doctors. But the mistake of a doctor can be removed from the staff but not the other way round.
A nursing home cannot guarantee human dignity if you have staff missing or to less educated staff. Quality needs education and the opportunity to practice what you have learned at school and not be misused as a worker when you are just a trainee.
There are webpages who tells you like 20 reason why you must love a nurse and it is sure a way to give this job a positive attitude and image but far to many nurses are simple hopeless and damaged and disillusion leads the way because the employer simple don't give a shit on how they feel and what they need.
It has a reason why some houses, hospitals have not a good name but unfortunately as a consumer you have to search the web to get the truth and the right information or have to ask friends which house and hospital is to recommend.
Yes, the most nurses walk their feet of and have a hard time pressure but try to be patient, thought many do not have it and mostly not with themselves. They forget to eat and make their breaks. They avoid the toilet even thought the bladder is screaming but they have no time. They don't watch their own health, even thought they see each they what danger it brings and I know very well that it is a truth that after 15 years in that area there is no one without (little) pain. (If they make it that long) As much a nurse can be a pain in the as for others, they bear it without a blink of an eye. They have understanding most the time and sometimes so less and must always meet the high expectations of others. And then they hear since ten years or more that it will get better and only experience the opposite.
More salary is a dream most have given up and just want more staff they don't get. But we have to pay more. This work is managing all situation, being always in time, knowing what to do and take to improvisation and multitasking.
But contrary to one may think there are not to less nurses out there, it is just that the most have left the job for good. We have a gap between the age of 35 and 50 which is a big problem as those are the one to help the older colleague and give strength to the younger.
Another problem is that the younger no longer have the luck to really practice the theory as they should and many of them have not the same work ethic as the older one and then many young people are much into ipad instead of lay down a people into bed. All work has to be fun nowadays otherwise they try to avoid and say no. The job as a nurse also needs strong nerves and many young people don't even bring the prerequisites.
Here the society has to ask itself what they teach the young people, our future. What understanding of work, life and quality, of responsibility do we teach them?!
So lets all together finally go on the street and fight for better conditions as even a nurse has the right to human dignity, but it is also your own future and way of getting care. Politic has to find a way to pay for it and make sure it is not only that people have to pay more and more and get less.
Do it always with LOVE & LIGHT in your heart!
