The Power of decorations can light you up a light and make you smile... no matter what kind of decoration you prefer... a flat or other parts of a house or garden are more warm and friendly when you do put some nice stuff on it or in it...
....yes the simplest way is to buy flowers or find them in nature and take 'em home and enjoy the beauty of a simple and not so simple thing like a flower or a green plant like a little tree for your place....
....or you find some other kinds of decoration, if you're not the best with flowers or plants... or you're a much traveler, then maybe these kind of things are better.... 
...and if you have not much money and don't know your taste yet, well then try it with candles, simple, warm and romantic.. gives you light and always a special mood...
For me I try a mix of different things to make myself feel that my place is special, my home and warm and to have something to enjoy and being grateful that these things are part of my life....
So, art can do this too.... if it's just for your home or a office, it always gives you the feeling of something special... and you'll be remind... that you're worth more then a dollar in the hand...
...yes books or something which looks like a book can be kind of decoration too... here is an example you can sit on, but otherwise, nice books can be read too... :-)
Here's an example which shows you why I love to have flowers home and like you see, the shining sun makes it more beauty and bit of a miracle...the play of the shadows... like in fairy tails, but only home... 
....and here's some inspiration I found in town.. it not only looks good at night, also when you walk by sometime when the sun is in the sky...
Another way to make it a lovely thing being at home is, having flowers which smell very sweet and good... and when you put them in different vases...
So, flowers are one kind of decoration I admire most like you see and I recommend them deeply....
Simple, to say there is no need of many....
Or try this one..... it's arty... and a simple autumn/ fall feeling home...
See books like this and you have something to look at and your guest will always find it interesting being at you ;-)
