Do we really think the CSD is needed? Is it not just a Street Party with crazy people running around half naked? Does people on the boardwalk understand what it is about? Does they see what these gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transexuals are talkin' about? It's so much music, so much party, so much alcohol.... Can we take this earnest? Has this demonstration lost it's sense?
Let's take a deeper look....:-)
Yes there are a lot of people comin' year after year to party, to show fetish, to show skin, to show themself and to be in drag, but also we have a lot of people comin' just as they are. Normal clothes and attitude. So, should only they come, because they have the better attitude? I think both is necessary. The Christopher Street Day is about diversity.
You don't see it, because you think it's just a commerce. The venture of just white people, or the venture with just the leather fetish people or all those crazy drags... Well, look deeper and see who is walkin' then you'll see we have diversity... you don't believe it and go to the alternative CSD? Well, what I saw there was less diversity and acceptance then on the commerce CSD. The most were dressed in black and looked unfriendly when we ( me and some friends) colorful people came and they preach tolerance to everyone and call the commerce CSD intolerant. Well, seemed to be the other way around, which does not mean that everything is just nice and better on the commerce CSD.
Yes they do drink a lot alcohol, and some come just to party, without thinkin' about why we have the CSD what we want to tell with this parade of joy. And yes a lot of people/ viewers don't really realize that this is not only a party train and you're right when you say that many don't know the real problem these gay and lesbians and transexuals have been through and still going through.
So is the CSD too less political... well, there was a time when the CSD was more a commerce party then political demonstration, but that has changed again... It became more and more visible again, that we have a lot to fight for... still ...and that the end of the street is far away. Not only in other countries our brothers and sisters have problem to stay alive or too be the way they are, because if they would be so open like we in germany they would be killed or had to fly...or in other countries speaking about being gay is forbidden or you get slashed... hanged or simple does not exist anymore. You know, in some countries they say gays does not exist, it's just a disease of the western world or only the problem of white people.
And women who love women just need the right man to turn around, also against the will of them.
Violence is often a common experience. An experience we know here too in Germany.
But the western world is still not that open and ready and free and enlightened as we used to say.
Just take a look at the laws and then the behavior of the folks... And then the homosexual, bisexual and transexual self are still fighting with self- confidence with the right way to live and to love and to work and to accept themself.
So these demonstration is to show proud, way of livings, different kinds of families, hopes, wishes and calls of what we need or think should change in law or the thinking of the people...
BUT do they have to party that much? Does it not harm all the ideas, all the fight?
WELL, NO. Because to party was always a part of the CSD. It was also to show that celebrating the life is part of being proud and showing that we are worth to be love and worth to be listen, worth to be accepted. That gays and lesbians and their friends will stop being victims.
And then MUSIC has always be a part of any demonstration... Music helps to keep the people together, to make them strong, to say to the viewers and addressee that we are here and wont be silent and wont stop till we've got what we want. May it be a singing, may it be a trumpet, may it be a dance.... A demonstration would not be that strong without music... just look in the history of demonstration on the streets! Since we know about them, they all have some kind of music.
But all those naked people or all those fetish people...must this be???
Well, must it be? There is no need for that--- you're right but then with the fetish people... this was from the beginning part of the CSD too, to show diversity, that they are sometimes like the stereotype people have -but also different to this. That the world is bigger than the little mans thinkin'... a chance to brighten your view, which I must confess still too less people take.
And those naked people--- mmh, like I wrote- some people don't take it so earnest and some of them have an very free interpretation and just want to shock. Nothing agains nudity from my side, but I do think maybe far too many try to abuse demonstration like these for their behavior.
To say them to stay out of the party? I am afraid, we are "a free world", but maybe we can try to make them understand, if they want to be naked on street, they can try to make their own party... we should tell them that this has nothing to do with politic, just being naked. And if they really want to be political as a nude then they have to show it with posters, with signs... but being just naked... thank you but thank you no.... !
The sad truth is that the press likes these people and also all those "crazy" and funny stuff you'll see and the more mad it seems, the better they think it is.... sad 'cos once a part of the press used to write "right" about it.
But with the change of everything we have from time to time and because nothing stays the same, I have hope that more and more people learn to understand, learn to accept, learn to see and learn to save lives and love.... and open their minds and souls... Am sure this will take time, but if nobody would be on the streets telling that gays and lesbians, transexuals and bisexuals exist... how could we change our point of view, if no one is showing us other ways..?
LOVE & LIGHT
