Since weeks the temperature has been going up and down but finally it became just colder and colder and the rain has stopped too, as it rained the last weeks over and over again.
No one had the feeling that they could get happy again. Such a gray! Day after day.
The wind blows today, but not that strong as it use to be the last days. Best day for a while as the sun shines and warms our checks. A perfect day where Susie and her family will move to another place because the new neighbors frighten them. So everyone is in a hurry, because it will be a long day and it is such big family. Two parents and how many children? 1200 already and it's not the end of the year as mother can have 2000 children a year.
Yes, Susie is a mouse. She is already to old to live home, but she never found the man of her life and was never really sure if she wants to.
You must know she was one and a half year old. For a mouse this is very old, as they only become two years, maybe three and very seldom four years. That is in fact stone old for a mouse. But Susie was not only old, she was a colorful mouse. You know most of her sisters and brothers were gray as her father was gray but some of her sisters had also different colors on their fur. Mother was a refugee from a laboratory. So her sisters and brothers had mostly three different colors and it was like spotted points in the middle of all the family. There were loved.
But Susie was always an outsider.
She has stripes.
The only one in the family with striped fur.
You can imagine that this is most time not really helping to hide from an enemy as she obviously was shining like a star could, everywhere she was.
So she had to keep herself in the dark and therefor never got any friends. Though she always dreamed of them. As her sisters and brothers gave her food and all that but they tried to avoid playing with her.
No, Susie was never sad about that as she understood very well why this happend.
A very unusual mouse I must say. Smart was she. Very.
Their neighbors were rats. Big rats and as this was not painful enough, they became more in town.
Although everyone could get enough food because people waste so much and it was easy to catch, the mouse remember far to well the time the rats not only stole their food, they also killed the mouse babies in the past. Since generations this warning goes on and on from mother to child to keep sure they will survive.
So today they move!
Finally all the family packed and ready to find a new home and as mother said that father said they heard about a place two hours from the place they lived till today.
Susie still wondering what she should take with her and what would be her new home like did not notice that all family started to walk away.
When she finally looked up again to tell the others that she had decided, no one was home. All gone. What a fright!
Immediately she started searching and calling.
That took time as you can imagine that a flat for nearly 2000 members is big.
So after a very long time she stopped and wondered what to do next as she never ask where exactly this new home was. All she just now knew was that this town was big. So big.
The name of the town was Berlin.
To ask every mouse in town where her family went could take more then three lives of a common mouse!
But she could not stay here!
Well, she was smart and there must be a way or place to go!
On she went out of the earth into a very, very sunny day. Actually first time after a very long time she went out in daytime. You remember her fur was not exactly like the earth and so everyone would have seen her in a second.
But as she went on, no one seems to care.
What a relief! Think she never liked the world outside that much, she now wonders what she may have seen wrong. Yes, she has to watch her steps and dodge a lot as those big humans never look down and watch their own steps! Were they never afraid of fall?
After an hour of springing around and trying this street and that street and fleeing from dogs and cats Susie sat down on a little blue stone. Breathing heavily, she tries to calm down and think twice. Where was she now in this town? She looked up, big houses and some were new, some old and in the back there was that big, big tower with a ball on it.
She overheard people calling him the TV tower. Whatever that means, she never heard of a TV but of towers. They came along in many stories from her mother.
Now many would become sad and think of their dearest mum but not Susie. With such a big family there is not much place to love an old child.
Instead Susie became aware that this could be a nice adventure.
But where to start?
What a question! She was already having her biggest adventure! She smiled. Then went up and step by step she went on, with keeping her back straight and her head held high.
Susie became an adventurer. Maybe the first mouse since a long, long time who dared to be! Maybe.
And so she discovered that the trees have lost next to every leave and that the humans had very big cloths as they don't have fur. How silly was that! But that was not her problem. Susie saw the sky and wondered how high it must be and the birds who fly. How did they do, even know she had to keep an eye on them too as some of them would like to eat a mouse as well but then she remembered she does not look very much like one.
What a luck to be different. No one cares and no one was afraid and no one hunted her. Lucky kid she was. Such a big lucky adventurer!
Suddenly in a street of old houses she smelled something very tasteful and new. What was that? She rushed to find out where it came from, always keeping her nose up. Looking around, feverish.
Market stalls came in sight and there it came from, this strange but beautiful smell. Susie kind of starting dreaming of beauty and the warmest luck. Sweet and crispy the smell became just stronger and Susie could no longer wait to see and know what this could be and of course she desperately wanted to taste it, eat it until she drops!
Gingerbread cookies all around and as a mouse she knew how to catch a fling. Hiding behind all the people and the light, as she knew she can't be sure that they will discover her and then she had to hide. She climbed up the table inside and then when no one watched she took her piece.
Oh what it did taste good and just when she thought she could take another, her nose catches a new fragrance. More sweet and colorful and kind of she wants to lick it. Her curiosity made her jump down and run over the street to follow this new adventure and taste.
Curves she had to take and she had to run back and forth as they were so many people and dogs.
All those dogs sniffing at her! She did not like that. What was she? A cake? Cheese?
All those running was very exhausting and as she finally reached her goal and saw the hundreds of Lollipops and candies Susie was just happy and without a doubt she took the first she could catch and run under the next tree to eat.
There she was sitting, gorged and a bit tired, but happy. What's next, she hums.
Oh she loved those world outside and as she could hear it over and over again it was christmas time! Oh how she loved christmas time as she never knew that was heaven.
This was the best of start of her new life! Sure she needed some kind of clothes to look more like an adventurer and kind of a pirate as she heard about that those people were frighten by others and respected. Sure she will find on her way through town something useful. It's Berlin after all!
Susie now went away from that christmas market and searched along the streets. Cats and dogs are still to avoid but she tried to ask other mouses but they just looked at her in disgust and went away. So she had to find out by herself. Maybe near that big tower? But that seems so far away and she was such a little thing.
A finger on her mouth she was thinking and an ear up in the sky she was eavesdropping to the humans. Her eyes went up and down, went left to right and back again and then she catches her rescue! Take the tram and you'll be there. How easy is that! Susie was looking around what that could be, this tram and there not far away was a stop with the name of a street and as Susie was smart, she could read. Yes, a reading mouse! How marvelous is that! Perfectly!
The place she has to drive was called Alexander Platz. A place from Alex? Well, anyway, all she had to do was now to wait for that thing called tram and to do as everyone who was waiting here does. Easy.
What a big yellow thing came! How could she come in there? The tram arrived and the doors opened. Much to high the first lever to climb in.
Quickly she looked around and jumped into a bag and that is how she came into the tram and drove all the way to that place.
Just before the bag went up into the air again, Susie left and when everyone was already out and the bell started to ring she jump liked a bird flies in the sky and landed in a flower pot with a lot of pine branches and a garland of lights.
This was not the soft landing she had dreamed of but okey. Susie picked the needles out of her fur and looked around.
Astonishing crowd of those big humans everywhere! How can she find a way through them? But more important where should she go?
Shops everywhere. And in the middle of all, hundreds of christmas market stalls.
The life of an adventurer can be such a hard work!
Another round of running, hiding, watching steps and jumping under and over shoes, tables, bags and dogs. It is exhausting but fun. All the things the eye can catch. So beautiful and all the different smells. Susie tried to remember where she found what, because she planed to come back later and take a closer look and maybe also to try to eat and drink from those wonderful things those humans seems to have there up above.
But first the shops. Susie is trying each and every one. Though she never has to pay but found something which fits her body and made her looking stylish and fab.
That was the biggest problem. She could find a big amount of kind of cloths but those cheap stores had clothes who where either ugly or fell apart she tried them and those better stores had to big things to wear. And this should be fun? All those stories she heard about those human loving this game. Really, where is the fun in that?
Mother most have got it wrong.
Finally Susie arrived on a market stalls with ostrich eggs. They had candles inside and where made into such beauty lamps and pots and well one looked like a cave for a mouse and one could be her tub in her new flat. She has to ask the guy if she could have it.
Susie went under the blanked and then was inside the market stall and there was a chair and Susie took the chance to sat down and then she clears her throat and started talking to the little man.
But he does not seems to take notice. She started again. No luck. Maybe she must be louder. So Susie took a deep, deep breath and and spoke with a fully voice.
His face went up. Wondering where this came from and as he still can her someone talking he looks around. Of course he tries to find a human in front of his market place. He stands up and looks down but no one to be found.
"I'm sitting next to you, you idiot! " Susie shouted as she had no patient. That little mans face went straight left and saw her. Susie smiling, while he can't believe his eyes. He turns around and then thinks, it's best to sit down on his own chair where he was working until he heard her.
Susie did not waste her time and start talking to him the second he sat down.
"Dear, could you tell me if I can get the bathtub?"
Of course our dear poor man did not have had any idea what she was talking about but as she pointed to what she called a tube he realized that's what she meant.
He shakes his head quickly and said: " Well, I use to sell it to whatever you may do with that."
"So I can get it. Fine. But as I don't have my new home yet, can you spare me that wonderful tube of yours so long?"
"Sure." He said, but our man was in no way sure how to respond. But as this was a very special situation, he decided to go on. Thinking a moment and said: "You sure have no money with you. But how on earth does it come that you sit there and want a tube?!"
So, Susie started to tell him her story, which took quite a time. In the end she smiled again and our man, that nice human nodded from time to time to show he understood.
"Well then you're on a journey and still as I can see it, haven't found some cloths of yours."
"Oh..... that's very true. Do you have an idea where to get some?"
Short time thinking and humming and looking around. He answered yes he knows where she can get the best of cloths. He had just remembered that he had in his bag the cloths of old dolls and those could very well fit Susie.
"Oh these looks to much like a princess!"-
"Oh those looks very good I'll try them!"
But as our friendly man is waiting Susie did not do a think but then nodded to him and ask him if he could turn around. She is shy and a lady. Gentlemen our man was, he turns around but could not help not to smile.
"Ready! You can look again"
Susie just looked like the best of adventurer now. Our man could not stop making compliments and Susie could not help but blushed. Both they smiled and then it was time to go. Feeling a bit sad as Susie now had the feeling she found her first friend and so they shake their hands with the promise to see each other again, and that was not because of the tub.
Now Susie walked on two legs as she thought this should be the way to enter the world.
Time to find a new flat and some friends! The christmas market will stay for a while, so she will come back.
As Susie went down the street, next to the red town hall, with her biggest smile she ever had and with the thought that she was and never could get happier, it started to snow.
She was wrong.
Now this was perfection. She could build a snowmouse!
What she had dreamed of that!
